The Roofing Industry Committee on Weather Issues, Inc. (RICOWI) honored Dave Roodvoets, DLR Consultants and the Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI) representative to RICOWI's Board of Directors, at the semi-annual meeting on October 20th in Houston, TX.

The Board recognized Roodvoets for his eminently distinguished leadership and program achievement by his induction into RICOWI as a Lifetime Achievement Honorary Member. This is the first time that RICOWI has given this award. His 30 plus years of experience in roof system engineering, wind science, program development and research have been of immense benefit to furthering the objectives of RICOWI.

He was active in the initial organization of RICOWI and served for seventeen years including terms as vice chairman (1992-1995) and chairman (1996-2000). RICOWI's forum to communicate openly and constructively flourished under his proactive leadership. Roodvoets participated in the Hail Investigation Program and was the field coordinator for the Wind Investigation Program teams. Among his other industry accomplishments, he was instrumental in the development of the ANSI/SPRI RP-4 Wind Design Standard for Ballasted Single Ply Roofing Systems and the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 Wind Design Guide for Edge Systems.

Phil Dregger, Institute of Roofing, Waterproofing & Building Envelope Professionals' (RCI) representative to RICOWI, presented Roodvoets with a framed certificate on behalf of the RCI Foundation in recognition of his many "contributions and years of dedication to the roofing industry". Among other accomplishments, Dregger specifically thanked Roodvoets for his efforts in promoting a greater understanding of roof wind performance and in helping to develop design aids of particular interest to practicing roof consultants (e.g., RP-4, ES-1).

SPRI named Mike Ennis as their new RICOWI representative. Ennis is the North America Application Technology Leader with Dow Building Solutions Research & Development. He is also an Affiliate Member of RICOWI and participates on the hail and wind investigation teams.

Tim Reinhold, Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) appointed Wanda Edwards as their representative on the Board of Directors. Edwards is the IBHS Director of Code Development.

Newly elected Board Chairman Rick Olson, Tile Roofing Institute (TRI), presented out-going Chair Joe Wilson, with a gavel plaque in appreciation of his leadership from 2000-2006. Wilson is the Metal Construction Association's representative to RICOWI and he also participates on the hail and wind investigation teams.

The 2007 spring workshop (seminar) will be held on March 1st (in conjunction with RCI's spring meeting) in Orlando, FL. Details will be posted on RICOWI's website.

RICOWI is a nonprofit organization comprised of all of the major roofing associations and includes members of academia, educational and testing facilities and others involved in the science of roofing. RICOWI's hail and wind investigation programs help to accelerate and establish new or improved industry consensus standard practices for weather design and testing where they are recognized as needed.
