RICOWI Celebrates!

RICOWI current and past members shared happy memories during the Fall Seminar / Celebration Event October 01 – October 3, 2009 in Lake Oswego, OR.

This festive celebration event had a dual purpose:  not only did RICOWI celebrate twenty years of education and research, but it celebrated the retirement of its first Executive Director, Patty Wood-Shields.

Following the General Board and Affiliate Member meeting, a celebratory dinner was held.  The dinner included a presentation by Dave Roodvoets of DLR Consultants and Rick Olson of Tile Roofing Institute.  The presentation included a look back at RICOWI's beginnings, and a look forward to RICOWI's future.

RICOWI's Accomplishments
  • Established an association that acts as a nucleus to bring all factions of the industry and academia together
  • Created a forum with members communicating openly and constructively on topics relating to testing, codes, insurance and other issues involving the science of roofing systems; resulting in increased involvement of government, academia, and industry
  • Created a database Bibliography of tests, papers and others documents related to wind research
  • Promoted research
  • Facilitated the edge metal detail research project which provided industry with the tools to develop the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 Standard
  • Developed the Wind Investigation Program (WIP) and the Hail Investigation Program (HIP) including workshops on proper recording & analysis of disaster events
  • Deployed teams to investigate damage from Hurricanes Charley, Ivan, Katrina and Ike and published formal written reports
  • Established a partnership with Colorado University's hail network CoCoRaHs program
  • Beginning in 1999, held bi-annual educational seminars
  • Achieved international recognition of RICOWI and its various programs as a leading edge industry forum for advancing roof related programs

The future of RICOWI is bright with opportunities to grow initiatives within its mission's core values of education and research. Discussion with members will continue to fine tune our next initiatives that will take RICOWI into the next decade. Updates will be posted on the website.

Many people were recognized at the dinner including George Courville as the "Founding Father" and Richard Coursey as the first Chairman Pro Tem.

Patty Wood-Shields was given a Lifetime Honorary Achievement Award in recognition for her outstanding contribution to the industry and to RICOWI.  Ms. Wood-Shields will still be involved with RICOWI as Administrator for Special Programs including the Hail Investigation Program (HIP) and Wind Investigation Program (WIP).

RICOWI's spring membership meeting will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the Rosen Creek Shingle Resort in Orlando, FL. The spring seminar will be held the following day. Details will be posted on the website.
