Powder Springs, GA — Mar 15, 2008 at 12:00 am

RICOWI held elections for its Board of Directors at the February 29, 2008 meeting in Phoenix, AZ. Re-elected for the 2008-2010 term are: Chairman, Rick Olson / Tile Roofing Institute; Vice-Chairman, Bas Baskaran / National Research Council of Canada and Treasurer, André Desjarlais / Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dan Walker / Metal Building Manufacturers Association was elected as the Board member representative to the Executive Committee. Dave Hunt / Revere Copper Products was re-appointed as the Affiliate Member representative to the Board of Directors.

The Board approved a second hail investigation for the 2008 season in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. Hail Task Force Chair Richard Herzog reported "new to the program this year is the introduction of hail pads that will be installed on facilities and residences in the target area. Colorado State University (CSU) operates the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (CoCoRaHS), which is a low-cost approach to hail monitoring and research. Following an event, the hail pads will be collected and sent to CSU for analysis." The hail pad analysis and investigation findings will be published in a formal report.

RICOWI conducted three of the most comprehensive roofing investigations in the aftermath of Hurricanes Charley, Ivan and Katrina. RICOWI Chair Rick Olson said "based on the success of the past investigations, the Board approved a hurricane investigation for 2008 and we plan to deploy seven four-member teams. Our report writers have been trained to use new database software called FileMaker Pro. This software will improve efficiency in the collection of data and expedite the production of the final report."

RICOWI's hail and wind investigation programs help to accelerate and establish new or improved industry consensus standard practices for weather design and testing where they are recognized as needed.

RICOWI's fall membership meeting will be held on Monday, October 6th at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Charleston, SC. The fall seminar will be held the following day. Details will be posted on the website.
